South Africa Equity Markets | 30 Sep 2015: South Africa’s Equity Indices Higher, Gold sector index lower ..
JOHANNESBURG, South Africa, Capital Markets in Africa —Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) All Share index finished 1.43 percent or 704.93 points higher to close at 50,088.86 points. The JSE Top 40 index also gained 721.72 points or 1.63 percent to end at 44,881.18 points.
The JSE financial sector index surged by 1.16 points to end at 42,683.43 points. Both Industrial and Industrial 25 sector indexes higher by 1.65 percent to close at 74,745.80 points and added 1.65 percent to settle at 67,168.54 points respectively. The Resource index surged by 0.73 percent or 228.30 points to close at 31,641.03 points but the Gold Mining sector index declined by 0.08 percent or 0.72 points with a closing level of 935.95 points.
Looking at the market strength/breadth (measured as the ratio of gainers to losers), the market recorded 215 price gainers, 123 price losers and 51 remaining unchanged, hence market strength/breadth closed positive. Out of the top gainers was Metmar Limited, whose shares rose by 34.67 percent to close at ZAR 1.01 after investors exchanged 5,946,390 shares. Wilderness Holdings Limited surged by 31.82 percent after trading 57 shares, boosting the share price to ZAR 5.80. Glencore Xstrata Plc also jumped by 15.56 percent to end at ZAR 19.16 after investors traded 25,733,654 shares. Renergen Limited advanced by 14.29 percent to end at ZAR 16.00 after exchanged a total of 129 shares. Lonmin Plc climbed by 12.18 percent to end at ZAR 3.50 after trading 6,400,005 shares.
On the losers’ table was, Datatec Limited whose shares decrease to ZAR 62.00 after 2,999,742 shares were bought and sold, resulting in a fall of 15.76 percent. Cadiz Holdings Limited tumbled by 7.06 percent to close at ZAR 1.58, after 36,000 shares were traded. Harmony Gold Mining Company Limited plummeted by 5.27 percent to trade at ZAR 8.63 a share after investors bought and sold 1,756,059 shares. Royal Bafokeng Platinum Limited slumped by 4.46 percent to trade at ZAR 23.98 after 262,135 traded deals. After investors bought and sold 1,581,212 shares, Petmin Limited sagged by 4.38 percent to trade at ZAR 1.31.
On the currency markets front, the South rand was stronger against US dollar at ZAR 13.8544 by adding 1.54 percent and against British pound to trade at ZAR 20.9050 after adding 1.18 percent. The rand appreciated by 1.71 percent against the Euro to close at ZAR 15.4549.
